Canadian Living restructuring staff, refreshing mag

TC Media's Canadian Living will have a much different masthead in the coming months. The mag itself will also undergo some changes, with a refresh scheduled for the September issue.

The staff changes, as made evident by eight recent job postings (nine if you count one posted in May), are due to a combination of factors, said a TC Media rep. "In fact, we have realigned the Canadian Living team last week to improve our workflow and solidify our team in light of our upcoming refresh," reads an emailed response to Masthead.

Some of the available jobs are due to staff promotions to newly created positions, some are new positions that have yet to be filled, and others are attributed to employees vacating their roles ("people who have left the company on their own over the course of the past weeks/months," clarifies the company).

Former senior associate art director June Anderson has been promoted to the newly created role of deputy art director, and former associate editor Kate Daley has been tapped for the new position of health editor, print & web. Both of their previous roles need to be backfilled.

New positions that have yet to be filled include senior features editor, lifestyle editor, and copy editor. Regarding further info on outgoing staff members, TC Media said it could not disclose employee details.

These are the biggest changes at Canadian Living since Jennifer Reynolds was appointed editor-in-chief late last year. The brand's last rehaul was in 2010. While TC said specific details on the September issue will come closer to launch date, Reynolds did say that the upcoming refresh was informed by reader response.

"In the last few months we’ve launched three research studies asking Canadian women what they love most about our content, what they want more of, less of, why they read the magazine and what topics they are really interested in," Reynolds said. "That feedback helped us recognize the areas where we are leaders in our category and where we can improve. We also took the time to poll non-readers to find out why they don’t engage with us and what we can say to excite and entice them to Canadian Living."

Canadian Living, launched 1975, is published monthly and has a circulation of 519,000 according to PMB 2013 Spring data. It recently won large circulation Magazine of the Year at the 2013 Editors' Choice Awards.
