The Tyee magazine offering Master Classes
The Tyee, an independent award-winning magazine in Vancouver, is doing something a little different to generate revenue.

The magazine is offering a spring series of seven "master classes," which are weekend workshops led by Tyee contributors and colleagues. The first session is this Saturday, March 31, led by bestselling author Alisa Smith [The 100-Mile Diet].

"Each class is different but they all have the same goal: to couple expert
training with expert advice, so participants can take what they've learned
out into their worlds and get to work on their own projects," noted Julie Jenkins, who handles administration and outreach for Tyee.

Most classes are capped at 20 participants, with the first session limited to 16 participants at a cost of $195 to attend [prices vary for other sessions]. The following session on April 14 led by Bill Tieleman ["the strategic mind behind the campaign that brought down the HST" in B.C.] is limited to 30 participants. About half of the space in the overall program is sold out, while some are already near capacity, noted Jenkins.

Other sessions feature world-renowned photographer Christopher Grabowski, investigative journalist Sean Holman and digital publishing expert Phillip Smith. The instructors are paid to develop and deliver their material, added Jenkins.

There could be teaching opportunities tied to the program in future. "It made sense to look within our community for instructors for the first set, we're brimming with talent and are always looking for creative ways to offer work to journalists," noted Jenkins. "That said, we're open to hearing pitches from potential teachers about classes we could offer in the future, and we'd love to hear what topics participants would like to learn, and from whom."
