Montreal-based general interest mag L'actualité dug up the most gold with first-place nods in six categories, including Catherine Dubé's eighth NMA award, a Service: Health and Family win for her article “Faut-il interdire le cellulaire à l’école?".

Report on Business Magazine and Toronto weekly the Grid, meanwhile, tied for highest take-home of gold and silver awards combined with seven prizes each. The Grid, by far the loudest contingent last night at the downtown Carlu venue, erupted in celebration for its five golds and two silvers. Report on Business scooped up two golds and five silvers.

Also winning multiple golds were The Walrus with four, Hazlitt with three, and two each for Maisonneuve, Maclean's and Corduroy.

Tablet Magazine of the Year went to Canadian House & Home for its March 2012 “Colour Issue,” and the award for Magazine Website of the Year went to Hazlitt, the online literary mag launched just this past August by Random House Canada.

The new blogs category was dominated by Maclean's, which enjoyed favourable odds with six out of ten nominations. The mag won gold for Julia Belluz's “Science-ish” and silver for Paul Wells's "Inkless Wells."

Awards were handed out in 47 categories from a total of 365 nominations, representing a field of 87 magazines. A full list of winners can be downloaded from the Magazine Awards blog
