The Fall 2013 issue of GardenMaking is a great example of what I like to call a “poster cover.” It is easy to imagine gardening enthusiasts blowing this cover up to poster size and taping it to the wall of their garden shed for inspiration.

“Articles by Belinda Gallagher and Lorraine Johnson offer a clear understanding and appreciation of the role native plants can have in our home gardens,” says editor-in-chief Beckie Fox.

The October 2013 issue of Jewellery Business magazine is ready to go to press with a hot look, inspired by The Great Gatsby.

“This is Jewellery Business’s third foray onto the newsstand. This time out, we are excited to take a step back in time to the Roaring Twenties with a haunting image reminiscent of speakeasies, flappers, and Prohibition,” said editorial director Blair Adams. “The visual ties with an article on art deco and vintage jewellery, brought to life in the recent movie, The Great Gatsby. The colour palette is simple and complements the imagery of the era.”

The magazine is available exclusively at Chapters/Indigo and is distributed by Disticor Direct.

The 2013 edition of Toronto Life’s City Home, has a smart, ultra-modern vibe, and promises a voyeuristic look “inside the city’s most stylish homes.”

Here’s what the editor, Maryam Sanati, had to say: “Our annual City Home issue is all about inspiring design and architecture, and where to find everything you’ll need to create your dream home. The pool house on the cover belongs to legendary ad executive Geoffrey Roche, a colourful, fun guy who appreciates clean lines and modernism. It works on the cover because it’s the urban ideal—a little bit of Palm Springs is North Toronto.”

The issue goes on sale August 5th, 2013, and sells for $7.95.

One of my 34 Cover Rules is:

Rule #10: Photos over Illustrations

But it is important to remember Rule #1: There are Always Exceptions to the Rules

The current issue of The New Yorker is a case in point. Funny. Beyond hysterical. Spot-on classic. A great addition to The New Yorker’s proud tradition of illustrated covers and humour.
